WACO - A recent study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers classified the Waco Dam as having Moderate to High Risk characteristics, but said it's not in imminent danger of failing and is currently performing its intended function.
Engineers from the Fort Worth District recently met with local cities and water utilities to discuss the Corps plan to improve safety at the dam.
The risk informed screening process considers current dam behavior, how well the dam meets current design criteria and the potential consequences of dam failure. Waco Dam's classification was a result of potential issues of seepage, piping and erosion, according to a news release from the Corps.
"Waco Dam is operating as designed but is approximately 47 years old. Therefore, we will continue to assess and ensure its safe operation," said Col.. Richard J. Muraski, Jr., Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District.
Waco Dam was last screened in 2008, and was placed into operation in 1965. It serves citizens of Texas providing flood risk management, quality water supply, environmental stewardship and recreational opportunities. The Corps says there are no plans to change the operations of the dam.
